OXFORD, Ohio - Junior goalkeeper Megan Drew made five second-half saves but the Miami RedHawks used two second-half goals to pull away for a 3-0 Mid-American conference victory over Missouri State on Friday, Oct. 2, in college field hockey at the Miami Field Hockey Complex.
Miami took a 1-0 lead into halftime after a defensive standstill in the first half between both squads, as the RedHawks (7-5, 2-0) and Bears (2-9, 0-1) combined for just three shots.
After their first shot went wide in the eighth minute, Paula Portugal notched her team-leading sixth goal of the year on Miami's second and last attempt of the half, giving the RedHawks a 1-0 lead in the 21st minute.
The RedHawks came out on the attack in the second half. Miami drew two penalty corner opportunities in the first two minutes and picked up a chance for a penalty stroke at the 37:10 mark. Portugal took the stroke for the RedHawks, but Drew made the save to keep the Bears' deficit at one.
Miami's 9-2 edge in penalty corners during the second half eventually wore down the MSU defense. Mariona Heras and Bea Dechant scored goals in the 53rd and 60th minute, respectively, to help Miami remain undefeated in conference play.
Dechant led the RedHawks attack with a goal and two assists in the game while goalkeeper Alysa Xavier made one save.
The Bears were outshot by the RedHawks 11-4 in the contest. Senior Holly Scherer had an MSU-high 3 shots with one on target and senior Sydney Richelieu had the only other shot for the Bears. All of Drew's saves in net for Missouri State came in the second half.
Missouri State plays its final nonconference game of the season at 1 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 4, as the Bears host Saint Louis at Betty and Bobby Allison North Stadium in their home opener. Following the rivalry game versus the Billikens, MSU has five remaining MAC contests with the next two at home against Ohio and Kent State on Oct. 9 and Oct. 11, respectively.
