CLEVELAND - Missouri State freshman Feli Heinzel is the Mid-American Conference Defensive Player of the Week in field hockey, the league office announced Tuesday, Oct. 13.
Heinzel kept up her stellar play in net as the Bears earned 2-0 and 1-0 victories over Ohio and Kent State, respectively, last week. In the Friday, Oct. 9, matchup versus Ohio, Heinzel made three saves with the final one coming with just 39 seconds left in the contest to keep the Bobcats off the scoreboard.
The goalkeeper continued to impress Sunday by making four out of five stops in the second half of the Bears' one-goal win against the Golden Flashes. That included a diving stop on a Kent State shot in the 39th minute and back-to-back saves in the 56th minute.
Heinzel has been the starting goalkeeper for the Bears' three-consecutive shutout victories, the first time the team has achieved the feat since 2001. Heinzel has earned clean sheets in all four of her collegiate victories during her debut season for Missouri State.
This is the first weekly honor for the Bears this year.
The Bears continue MAC play with a 2 p.m. CST contest at Central Michigan Friday, Oct. 16, and play their final road game of the regular season at Ball State on Saturday, Oct. 24. MSU makes its regular season home finale at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 31, versus the Longwood Lancers at Betty and Bobby Allison North Stadium.
