SPRINGFIELD, Mo. - A strong final round Tuesday (Oct. 13) gave the Missouri State women's golf team an 11-stroke victory at its own MSU/Payne Stewart Memorial at Twin Oaks Country Club. Sophomore Stine Pettersen posted a one-shot triumph in the medalist competition and, along with teammate Verena Gimmy, gave MSU a 1-2 finish.
The Bears led Houston Baptist by a single stroke after 36 holes, but a 293 in the final round, led by Megan Furnish's 70, allowed them to cruise to the team title. MSU posted 310-301-293--904 to outlast HBU, which had 312-300-303--915. South Dakota State finished third in the nine-team field with 924, followed by Oral Roberts (926), Oklahoma City (929), Western Illinois (948), Drake (958), Creighton (967) and Cardinal Stritch (1010).
Pettersen, last year's conference newcomer of the year, posted her fourth straight top-10 finish and first collegiate title by shooting 73-73-77--223. Gimmy was a shot back with 78-73-73--224 for her second consecutive top 10, tying with Giorgia Carletti of HBU, who carded 80-74-70.
Furnish's career-best one-under-par 70 propelled her to fifth place at 80-77-70--227. Freshman Hailey Burgen placed 11th while playing as an individual, shooting 75-73-82--230. Freshman Ashley Childers tied for 16th with 82-79-73--234, while another freshman, Fay Carpenter, posted 79-78-79--236 to tie for 25th. Junior Kiersten Prater shot 85-84-88--257 and placed 45th while playing individually.
Next up for MSU is the Little Rock Classic in Hot Springs, Ark., Nov. 1-3.
