Bears, Pettersen Lead Entering Final Round at Stewart Memorial

Oct. 12, 2015

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. - The Missouri State women's golf team will enter Tuesday's (Oct. 13) final round of the MSU/Payne Stewart Memorial with a one-stroke lead, while its sophomore standout Stine Pettersen also leads by the slimmest of margins in the medalist race.

The tournament, which is named after the Springfield native and PGA Tour standout who died in a plane crash in 1999, is being played at the par 71, 6017-yard Twin Oaks Country Club.

Windy conditions and tough pin placements kept scores high for Monday's first two rounds. The Bears shot 310-301--611, one better than Houston Baptist, which posted 312-300--612. South Dakota State is third with 620, while Oral Roberts is fourth (622), and Western Illinois and Oklahoma City are tied for fifth (623). Drake (639), Creighton (649) and Cardinal Stritch (671) round out the nine-team field.

Pettersen, who's finished in the top 10 in the previous three tournaments, carded a pair of 73's for a 146 total and a one-shot edge on Shinwoo Lee of Oral Roberts, who went 75-72--147. Lee and MSU freshman Hailey Burgen, who's another stroke back in third with 75-73--148, are both playing as individuals, able to compete in the medalist race but not count toward their team's score.

Sophomore Verena Gimmy is next for the Bears at 78-73--151 and tied for sixth, while teammates Megan Furnish and Fay Carpenter are tied for 18th with 157 totals. Furnish shot 80-77 while Carpenter had 79-78.

Freshman Ashley Childers is tied for 32nd after recording 82-79--161 and junior Kiersten Prater, playing as an individual, shot 85-84--169. Junior Caroline Boone posted 81 in the first round before being forced to withdraw due to injury.

Tuesday's final round is scheduled for an 8:30 a.m. shotgun start.
