CLEVELAND - The Missouri State field hockey team had 11 student-athletes recognized on the 2014 Field Hockey Academic All-MAC Team, the Mid-American Conference announced Wednesday, Jan. 21.
Missouri State had the most amount of student-athletes recognized among the seven MAC field hockey teams, with 46 student-athletes total earning academic all-conference honors.
Bears selected to the Field Hockey Academic All-MAC Team include Patrice Ahl, Megan Drew, Kimberleigh Eng, Jackie Eskue, Dominique Leyva, Cami Mullins, Jessi Pope, Charlie Redhead, Sydney Richelieu, Brynne Satre, and Holly Scherer.
Patrice Ahl, a junior from St. Albert, Alberta, started and played in all 18 games for the Bears this past season. The defender recorded her first-career goal and points in a 2-1 victory over Davidson on Oct. 5. This is the second consecutive year Ahl has earned academic all-conference honors.
Megan Drew played in goal for every minute of the Missouri State 2014 season. The San Diego native made a career-high 12 saves in a loss to Miami University on Oct. 24. She had previously set a career high with 11 saves in a 4-3 overtime loss to No. 20 James Madison on Sept. 19. This is the sophomore's first Academic All-MAC award.
Kimberleigh Eng earned her second-straight academic honor from the conference. The Woodbridge, Va., native played in all 18 games for Missouri State in 2014 and made starts in 11 contests. One of the junior's highlights this season was her goal which helped clinch a 4-1 victory for the Bears over Saint Louis on Sept. 7.
A junior from Fallbrook, Calif., Jackie Eskue earned her second academic award from the MAC. The defender played in all 18 games for MSU, which included nine starts for the Bears. She scored her first-career goal off a corner opportunity in a home game against La Salle and notched her first-career assist in a 2-1 home victory over Davidson on Oct. 5.
Dominique Leyva appeared in all 18 games for the Bears. The junior earned her first point of the season on an assist to a Holly Scherer goal in a 2-1 loss to Ohio on Oct. 31. The San Diego, Calif., native was an Academic All-MAC honorable mention selection last season.
Cami Mullins earned her first Academic All-MAC selection in her first season at MSU. The midfielder competed in all 18 games for the Bears after transferring from Robert Morris University. The Worthington, Ohio, native made five starts and averaged over 35 minutes of playing time per contest.
A defender that started and played in all 18 of the Bears' games, Jessi Pope was recognized academically by the MAC for the second time. The Stafford, Va., native drew only one green card on the back-line for the Bears. The junior had an assist on Missouri State's first goal of the season on Sept. 1 at Villanova
Charlie Redhead was a Second Team All-MAC selection in 2014. The junior captain played and started in 17 of the 18 Missouri State games. A native of Norfolk, England, Redhead earns her second consecutive academic award from the MAC. This season, Redhead recorded the third-highest team totals in goals (5), points (12), shots (31) and shots-on-goal (18).
Sydney Richelieu played in all 18 games, including nine consecutive starts to end the 2014 season for the Bears. The Fallbrook, Calif., native scored a goal in a 5-4 overtime victory over UC Davis at home on Sept. 4. Richelieu also tied for the team lead with three assists. The junior forward earns her second career Academic All-MAC award.
A redshirt sophomore from Davis, Calif., Brynne Satre played in all 18 games for the Bears. The defender started in 12 games for MSU, with eight straight starts to end the season. The two-time Academic All-MAC honoree, Satre made her first career defensive save in a home loss to Miami on Oct. 24.
Holly Scherer earns her second Academic All-MAC award after leading the Bears in scoring in 2014. A junior forward from Belmont, Ontario, Scherer had team-highs in goals (8), points (19) and shots (49). She also finished the season among individual leaders in the conference in shots (5th), shots per game (4th), goals (tied-5th) and points (tied-6th).
The Academic All-MAC honor is for student-athletes who have excelled in athletics and academics. To qualify, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.20 cumulative GPA and have participated in at least 50 percent of the contests for their particular sports. First-year students and junior college transfers in their first year of residence are not eligible for the award.
