FENTON, Mo. - The Missouri State field hockey team battled undefeated Saint Francis to the end, but the Red Flash used a first-half goal to defeat the Bears 1-0 on Saturday, Sept. 27, at Scott Gallagher Soccer Park.
The eventual game-winning goal was scored in the 29th minute. The Red Flash's Carissa Makea took in a corner from the top of the scoring circle and her pass in front of goal was one-timed by Saint Francis' Selena Adamshick into the back of the net.
Adamshick's fifth goal of the season proved to be enough for the Red Flash.
MSU put up four shots in the first half - with two on goal - but weren't able to have as much success offensively due to Saint Francis' pressure.
Sophomore goalkeeper Megan Drew kept the Bears within reach, making four of her five saves in the second half.
Despite being outshot by 10-4 and giving up a 9-3 margin on penalty corners, the Bears continued to battle and had an opportunity to tie it up in the final seconds with the ball on their offensive end.
With the victory, Saint Francis improved to 8-0 on the season. Missouri State dropped to 2-8 with its second consecutive one-goal loss.
The Bears play the final game of a six-game road stretch at the University of Iowa at 1 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 28, against the Hawkeyes. MSU returns home for the first time in almost a month when the Bears take on Kent State on Friday, Oct. 3, at Betty and Bobby Allison North Stadium.
