WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. - Alyssa Ercolino scored two first-half goals to lead the Monmouth Hawks to a 3-0 victory over the Missouri State Bears in college field hockey on Friday, Aug. 29, at So Sweet A Cat Field in West Long Branch, N.J.
The Bears and Hawks remained scoreless for the first 25 minutes of the game, before Ercolino scored on an assist from Carol Rengifo to put the Hawks ahead. Ercolino went on to tally her second goal of the day in the final minute of the first half. MSU had nine penalty corner chances in the game - including two in the second half - but a Maartje Wicherink goal with 12 minutes left in the second half put the game out of reach.
Junior Holly Scherer led the Bears by taking five shots, with three on-goal. Sophomore goalkeeper Megan Drew made two saves and defender Jessi Pope recorded a defensive save.
The Bears continue their East coast trip at 11 a.m. CT Saturday, Aug. 30, in a matchup against Rider in Lawrenceville, N.J. MSU will finish its road trip with an 11 a.m. CT game at Villanova on Monday, Sept. 1, before playing its first game at Betty and Bobby Allison North Stadium on Thursday, Sept. 4, against the UC Davis Aggies.
