ST. LOUIS, Mo. - Missouri State sophomore first baseman Bethany Sullinger was named this week's recipient of the MVC Scholar-Athlete of the Week honor, the league office announced on Wednesday (May 7). Sullinger, a Kansas City native with a 3.36 grade point average in middle school education, has been clutch all season and she shined when needed most with the game-winning RBI to send MSU into the MVC Tournament.
Last week, Sullinger drove in five runs giving her 45 RBI on the season, second-most in the MVC and one shy of tying the single-season school record. She had four big runs batted in in game one while collecting a career-high four hits. Sullinger had two doubles and scored twice with all four RBI coming with two outs to up her league-leading total to 28 two-out RBI.
In game two on Saturday, she went 1-for-2 with a pair of walks. Then on Sunday, she hit a sacrifice fly in the seventh inning with the bases loaded, pushing home the winning run. On the week, Sullinger hit .500 with five RBI, two runs scored, two walks and two doubles.
It is the first scholar-athlete award for Sullinger, who was named MVC Player of the Week on February 17 this season. In addition to leading the team in RBI, Sullinger tops the Bears with 83 total bases, a .529 slugging percentage and is tied with four triples.
To qualify for Missouri Valley Conference Scholar-Athlete of the Week laurels, student-athletes must carry a cumulative grade-point average of 3.20, completed at least one academic year at a Valley institution and must be at least a sophomore in academic standing.
Missouri State heads to Normal, Ill., to open the MVC Tournament against UNI (28-19, 14-12) on Thursday at 11:05 a.m. The game can be viewed online through the Valley Live page.
