MSU Women's Golf Inks Three in Early Signing Period

Nov. 18, 2014

SPRINGFIELD - The Missouri State women's golf team received three commitments during the National Letter of Intent early signing period, head coach Kevin Kane announced on Tuesday.

Joining the Bears for 2015-16 are Hailey Burgen, Fay Carpenter and Ashley Childers. "I'm excited about this class and what they can bring to our program," Kane said. "I think they all have the potential to contribute right away and will help give us a very competitive atmosphere within the team next season."

Hailey Burgen • 5-4 • Andrews, Texas • Andrews High
Burgen is on her way to Springfield from Andrews High School in Andrews, Texas, where she played four years of golf for her father, Mark, a former golfer at Stephen F. Austin. Burgen has led the Mustangs to three consecutive state championships as a three-time all-district and two-time all-region and all-state performer. Burgen won the individual district title as a junior and holds a 73-stroke scoring average through the fall portion of her senior season.

Kane on Burgen
"Hailey comes from an outstanding high school program that's already won three state titles. She's a consistent player who knows what it's like to win and what it takes. She has good fundamentals and isn't afraid to put in the work involved in taking her game to the next level."

Fay Carpenter • 5-5 • Ringwood, Dorset, England • Queen Elizabeth's School
Carpenter has had a decorated junior career in England. She qualified for the Junior European Championships in Spain as a senior and was second in the Junior European Open Grand Final as a junior. She won the Ferndown Golf Club Ladies Championship in course-record fashion. Carpenter also claimed the West of England Girls Championship and the Dorset County Girls Championship. As a sophomore in 2012, Carpenter won both the Knighton Health Girls and Ladies Club Championships, while doing the same in 2011.

Kane on Carpenter
"Fay has a great resume of competition within her own country and throughout Europe. She's done well in some big tournaments. She's fundamentally sound and consistent and I think will have no problem adjusting to the game at the collegiate level. She's excited to come to America and we're excited to have her."

Ashley Childers • 5-4 • Mount Vernon, Mo. • Mount Vernon High
Childers comes to Missouri State after playing four years of golf for coach Leah Clark at Mount Vernon High School, where she is fresh off an individual Class 1 state championship at Springfield's Rivercut Golf Course. A senior captain of the Mt'Neers, Childers also was a district and sectional champion as well as being named an Ozarks Sports O-Zone and Chevy Dealers of the Ozarks Athlete of the Week. Her team won the district championship for the fourth consecutive season and was runner up at the sectional tournament in 2014. Childers was second individually at the state championship as a junior and was named the O-Zone Best Girls Golfer, leading her team to second at sectionals and fifth at state. She won her first Chevy Dealers of the Ozarks Athlete of the Week award as a sophomore and was named to the all-district, all-sectional and all-state teams.

Kane on Childers
"Ashley is outstanding on the golf course and in the classroom. She has really made big strides with her game over the last year or so. I think she's always been a very intense competitor and extremely hard worker, but now has developed her game to go along with that. She loves to compete."
