MSU Softball Volunteering at Fall Youth Miracle League Again

Oct. 7, 2014

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. - For the third-consecutive year, the Missouri State softball team is volunteering to aid the youth Miracle League of Springfield. The Bears have been volunteering under the "Buddy" program which provides encouragement and assistance as the young players with disabilities participate in baseball or softball.

"This year we are able to commit to all seven weeks," said Associate Head Coach Beth Perine. "Our team is split, half come for the 6 o'clock game and half come for the 7 o'clock game. This is a wonderful opportunity for our team to share their love of our sport with players who have a passion for the game."

The softball team is participating in the entire seven-week fall season that began on Sept. 8 on Monday evenings at the Betty and Bobby Allison Miracle League Ball Field at Dan Kinney Park on Springfield's southeast side. Each Monday, there are games scheduled at 6:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. MSU has split the team into two groups of volunteers in order to assist at both games each Monday.

The Betty and Bobby Allison Miracle League Ball Field is a specially equipped, custom designed field with a cushioned synthetic turf that allows children in wheel chairs and walkers to glide unrestricted without fear of injury. It is a level playing field where children with disabilities can hit, run, catch and play ball.

For more information on the Miracle League Field and Leagues, visit the Springfield-Greene County Parks and Recreation website at http://parkboard.org/823/Miracle-League-Ball-Field.

MSU will be holding a bone marrow donor registration drive on Friday, October 17 and be taking donations at BearFest Village on October 18 to benefit teammate Allie Alvstad and her fight against acute myeloid leukemia. The softball Bears will also be volunteering at the Bass Pro Marathon on Sunday, November 2 and will be working the aid station at mile marker 4. Additionally, the Bears will be helping with Meals A Million on Friday, November 14 as the team continues to give back to the community.
