SPRINGFIELD, Mo. - The Missouri State field hockey team ended a six-game drought by defeating the Davidson Wildcats, 2-1, at Betty and Bobby Allison North Stadium on Sunday, Oct. 5, in a nonconference matchup.
The Bears (3-10) controlled most of the first half despite going into the second half scoreless, and capitalized in the second half in the 50th minute.
After junior Leah Reitmayer had two shots stopped by Davidson goalkeeper Emily Leytham, MSU junior Patrice Ahl found the back of the net off Leytham's second deflection for the first goal of her career.
The Wildcats (2-9) tied the game up in the 56th minute. Davidson was able to get the ball in front of the Bears net, when Melissa Funsten passed the ball to the left of the goal to a wide open Kaity Anstrom for the equalizer.
MSU ended the game with a 17-5 edge in shots and 10-3 advantage in penalty corners, which ended up being the deciding factor for the Bears.
In the 66th minute, Reitmayer took the corner and passed it to the top of the circle to MSU junior defender Jackie Eskue. She was able to find freshman Andrea Soler Codina to her left, who scored the game-winner past a group of Davidson players to Leytham's left to give the Bears the 2-1 victory.
MSU's Soler Codina tallied her fourth goal of the season, while Ahl and Eskue notched their first points of the season. Bears sophomore goalkeeper Megan Drew made three saves, while Davidson's Leytham saved seven of the nine MSU shots on goal.
The Bears will next take on Ball State in a Mid-American Conference game at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 11, in Muncie Ind.
