The Missouri State field hockey team is set to take on the Bobcats of Ohio University in the final game of the season for the Bears on Friday, Oct. 31, at 2 p.m. CST at Pruitt Field in Athens, Ohio. The Mid-American Conference clash between the Bears and the Bobcats is the final regular season conference game for both squads, with Ohio already qualifying for the MAC Championship tournament and MSU eliminated from championship contention.
Weekend Review
Missouri State sophomore goalkeeper Megan Drew made a career-high 12 saves, but the Miami RedHawks prevailed 3-0 over the Bears in college field hockey on Friday, Oct. 24, at Betty and Bobby Allison North Stadium. MSU freshman Andrea Soler Codina took the only shot on goal for the Bears in the fourth minute, before Miami gained control of the momentum with Ali Froede, Shannon Regan and Geagy Pritchard scoring goals for the RedHawks. Soler Codina, Jackie Eskue and Charlie Redhead each registered shots for the Bears. MSU finishes with a 3-4 home record in their first season at Betty and Bobby Allison North Stadium.
MAC Breakdown
The Mid-American Conference tournament has been set with the four participants officially clinching berths over the weekend. Kent State (5-0), Central Michigan (4-1), Miami (3-2) and Ohio (3-2) will compete in Kent, Ohio, for the conference championship on Nov. 7-8. Longwood finished conference play with a 2-4 record, while Ball State (1-5) and MSU (0-5) each have a MAC contest remaining.
About Ohio University
The Ohio Bobcats enter Friday's game against the Bears 4-9 overall and 3-2 in the MAC. Ohio clinched its berth to the MAC Championship tournament with a 3-2 overtime victory over Central Michigan on Saturday, Oct. 25. Lauryl Desch and Adele Sammons lead the Bobcats in scoring with 12 points each, while goalkeeper Brittany Walker has a 3.47 goals-against average and .602 save percentage this season.
Drew Sets Career-Best Marks Against Miami
MSU sophomore goalkeeper made 12 saves on Friday, Oct. 24, against Miami, besting her previous career-high mark of 11 set on Sept. 19 at No. 20 James Madison. Drew made six saves in both the first and second halves to keep the Bears in contention.
In the Lineup Day-in & Day-out
Holly Scherer, Andrea Soler Codina, Leah Reitmayer, Patrice Ahl, Jessi Pope and Ruth Reid have started and played in each game this season for the Bears. Among those six MSU players, only Scherer had accomplished that previously.
Young Earns MAC POTW Honors
Junior captain Liz Young was named the Mid-American Conference Defensive Player of the Week for her performances against UC Davis and Saint Louis, as announced by the conference on Tuesday, Sept. 9. Young earned her first weekly award of her career by making two defensive saves against UC Davis in a 5-4 overtime victory on Sept. 4. She also registered an assist on Charlie Redhead's second goal of the season on Sunday, Sept. 7.
Scherer MSU Student Athlete of Week
Junior Holly Scherer scored a hat trick against UC Davis on Sept. 7, and was named MSU Student Athlete of the Week for her effort. Scherer's third goal of the game in the 80th minute was the game winner in a 5-4 overtime victory against the Aggies.
Bears 7th in Preseason Poll
The Missouri State field hockey team was picked to finish seventh in the Mid-American Conference, according to a poll of the conference's head coaches released Monday, Aug. 25.
The Bears return 12 players from last season, with 312 combined games played between them during their careers.
A Junior-Laden Bears Squad
The Missouri State field hockey team may not have a senior on its roster, but it has plenty of familiar faces. Eleven juniors make up the Bears lineup this year, with ten of those players having game experience for MSU. In all, 12 players return this season having played for the Bears in 2013.
All-MAC Honoree Back in 2014
Junior Charlie Redhead heads into 2014 following a 2013 season that earned her all-MAC second team honors. The midfielder earned her first all-conference accolades for MSU, in part by picking up career-highs in multiple statistical categories. She finished last season third on the team in points and tied for first in assists.
Bears to Play at New Home in 2014
Seven home games highlight Missouri State's schedule in 2014, with the opening of the Betty and Bobby Allison North Stadium. Seating 250, the new stadium will serve as the home for the Bears field hockey program and the lacrosse teams.
