MURFREESBORO, Tenn. - The Missouri State women's golf team closes its fall season at the Blue Raider Invitational at Old Fort Golf Club on Monday and Tuesday.
The Bears are making their first appearance at the event hosted by Middle Tennessee. Missouri State is coming off of a tie for third place in its only home tournament of the season, last week's MSU Payne Stewart Memorial. The Bears are seeing improvement as the fall season winds up.
"We've made a lot of strides, the last couple of tournaments, so we're excited to finish up the fall season and maintain that momentum going into the off-season," said Missouri State head coach Kevin Kane. "It'll be a good measuring stick for us, a lot of teams kind of in the same boat."
The 15-team tournament gets underway at 8:30 a.m., both Monday and Tuesday with teams playing 36 holes the first day and 18 the next. Some of the participating schools include MTSU, Belmont, Jacksonville State, Tennessee Tech, Arkansas State and Western Kentucky, among others.
Six Bears will compete on the 6,859-yard, par-72 course this week. Making her 2014-15 debut, as part of Missouri State's primary top five, is sophomore Caroline Boone. Senior Megan Thompson, junior Megan Furnish and freshmen Verena Gimmy and Stine Pettersen join the Wynne, Ark., native. Senior Estefania Acosta is slated to compete as an individual.
Boone opened her second season in Springfield last week as part of the Bears' second team in the event at Twin Oaks Country Club, and tied for 17th overall, shooting a 15-over-par 228. She led the team, which shot 944, to a 10th-place finish in the field of 15.
Pettersen paced the Missouri State first team (904) with a 12-over 225 to sit alone in ninth place overall - her best finish as a Bear.
