SPRINGFIELD -- In conjunction with the Missouri Valley Conference schedule release on Wednesday afternoon (Sept. 4), Missouri State has finalized its entire 2013-14 men's basketball schedule, third-year head coach Paul Lusk has announced.
The Bears will host 18 games at JQH Arena this winter, take on defending NCAA champion Louisville, renew a long-standing in-state rivalry, and participate in the competitive Corpus Christi Challenge.
Highlighting the non-conference schedule is a Dec. 17 trip to Louisville for a nationally-televised game on ESPN2 against the Cardinals at the KFC Yum! Center. The Bears will also play a pair of nationally-televised games as part of the inaugural Corpus Christi Challenge, which kicks off with a pair of home games Nov. 24 (Hampton) and Nov. 26 (Liberty) before MSU plays Texas A&M on Nov. 29 in a neutral-site game that will air on CBS Sports Net. Missouri State will play either Virginia or SMU the following night, which will also be televised on CBS Sports Net.
Missouri State will also host Southeast Missouri State on Dec. 29 as its final non-conference test before Valley play begins Jan. 2. The visit from the Redhawks will renew the Bears' longest rivalry in what will be the 143rd meeting between the schools, dating back to 1910.
"I think our non-conference schedule will provide us with some challenges and great opponents," Lusk said. "It's a good balance of teams that will prepare us for the Valley schedule. I'm excited about the upcoming season."
MSU will kick off the campaign with a pair of exhibition games at JQH Arena, Oct. 27 (McKendree) and Oct. 29 (Missouri Southern). The regular-season opener will be Nov. 8 at Old Dominion in a BracketBusters return game from two years ago, and the regular-season home opener will be Nov. 16 against regional rival Tulsa.
The Bears will also host Grambling (Nov. 20), Cameron (Dec. 4) and Alabama A&M (Dec. 21) in the non-conference portion of their schedule and will travel to Oral Roberts (Dec. 13).
Lusk's squad will open its 18-game Missouri Valley Conference schedule on Thursday, Jan. 2 with a visit from Illinois State. The Bears will also host Wichita State (Jan. 11), Evansville (Jan. 21) and Southern Illinois (Jan. 25) as part of a nine-game January league slate.
In February, Missouri State will be at home five times with conference visits from Bradley (Feb. 1), Drake (Feb. 12), Northern Iowa (Feb. 15), Indiana State (Feb. 22) and league newcomer Loyola Chicago (Feb. 25). March will see the Bears close out the regular season at Wichita State (March 1) before the MVC Tournament in St. Louis, March 6-9.
Television information and start times for all conference games will be announced at a later date.
The Bears will begin practice on Friday, Sept. 27 and will make their first public appearance during the team's annual Twilight Tipoff event, scheduled for Friday, Oct. 18. Bears' season ticket information is available at MissouriStateBears.com or by calling (417) 836-3302.
