The Missouri State volleyball team (14-9, 6-5 Missouri Valley Conference) concludes a five-match homestand Tuesday at 6 p.m. when Southeast Missouri State (13-12) comes to town, then steps back into MVC play on the weekend with road matches against Southern Illinois (12-11, 7-4) at 7 p.m. Friday and Evansville (8-14, 3-8) at 6 p.m. Saturday.
The Opponents
Southeast Missouri State is 13-12 overall and 5-5 in Ohio Valley Conference play, and 17 of the team's 25 matches have lasted more than three sets. As a team, the Redhawks hit .177 compared to .182 for the opposition and average 10.93 kills, 1.17 aces, 15.91 digs and 2.43 blocks per set.
Southern Illinois is 12-11 overall and 7-4 in MVC play. The Salukis are led offensively by Jessica Whitehead, who ranks second in the MVC with 4.04 kills per set, and hit .198 as a team compared to .190 for opponents. SIU averages 13.00 kills, 1.13 aces, 15.21 digs and 2.28 blocks per set.
Evansville is 8-14 overall and 3-8 in league matches. Sophomore Ashley Ring is fourth in the MVC with 3.46 kills per set, and the Purple Aces average 11.40 kills, 0.77 aces, 17.14 digs and 2.25 blocks per set for the season. UE hits .173 as a team and opponents hit .214.
The Series
Missouri State holds a 16-2 lead over SEMO with seven consecutive victories, most recently a 3-0 home win in 2010.
The Bears lead SIU 46-17 in the all-time series, winning 15 of the last 18 meetings.
Missouri State leads Evansville by a 37-3 margin, losing just twice since 1999.
First Meetings This Season
The Bears lost to SIU in five sets on Oct. 5. Carly Thomas had 65 assists and 21 digs, and four Bears had at least 11 kills, but the Salukis took the fifth set, 17-15.
Against Evansville Oct. 4, the Bears hit .271 and piled up 52 kills in three sets to defeat the Aces. Christine McCartney led the way with 13 kills, including the 1,000th of her career.
