March 9, 2012

The Missouri State women's golf team shot 306 in the first round of the Rio Verde Invitational on Friday (Mar. 9) and is tied for second after 18 holes. The Bears and the rest of the 16-team field battled windy conditions at the Quail Run layout at the Rio Verde (Ariz.) Country Club.

Akron has a one-stroke lead over the Bears and Eastern Michigan after carding 305. Texas A&M-Corpus Christi is fourth at 309, while Penn State (310) is fifth, followed by Kansas (312), Western Michigan (313), Toledo (316), and Ball State and Wichita State (317) rounding out the top 10. Then came Arkansas-Little Rock (319), Northern Arizona and Xavier (321), Ohio (328), Yale (329) and Bradley (337).

Seniors Kelsey Welber and Catherine Dolan led a balanced MSU squad, shooting 75 and 76, respectively, to place sixth and eighth after the first round. Junior Emma Clegg was next with 77 for a tie for 15th, a shot ahead of junior Hermine Greyling, who's in 21st after posting 78. Freshman Megan Thompson carded 80 and is tied for 38th. Ryann White of Texas A&M-Corpus Christi is the first-round leader after firing an even-par 71.
