Final Stats
The Missouri State field hockey Bears (1-3) were able to turn things around on day two of their Louisville trip as they came away with the 3-2 victory over Appalachian State (0-3). The Bears were able to get the match started off right with Sarah Bradley knocking in a goal off a direct shot from a penalty corner 12 minutes into the first half. The goal was assisted by Reiann Stoute and Chelsey Medlock.
Appalachian State would tie the match up with Kelly Allaband scoring a goal late in the second half off a penalty corner. Both teams would remain scoreless the rest of the second half, ending the game 1-1 at the half.
Just a few minutes into the second half, Appalachian State would draw first blood off a goal from Brooke Angellella, but MSU would answer with a goal of their own half way through the half, with Bradley coming up big off yet another penalty corner, assisted by Reiann Stoute. The Bears would capitalize on another opportunity less than seven minutes later as Bradley made a pass from the right end line to find Hillary Lawless in front of the keeper, giving the Bears the 3-2 lead. MSU would hold the lead for the remainder of the match.
The Bears made big changes in the match against Appalachian State as assistant coach Erika Domkowski explained, "We played the full 70 minutes, and everyone played great as a team, which is why we came out on top. Everyone did a tremendous job of going to the ball and we were always moving, never stopping."
MSU saw the back of the net well with Bradley coming up big with two of the Bears' three goals for the match. "Bradley made great decisions in the circle which helped to cause a lot of penalty corners for us", said Dombkowski. The Bears were seeing contributions from all over the field, with Lori Sinclair managing the midfield and solidly distributing the ball and making great passes. MSU also saw strength in the backfield from Chelsey Medlock who showed defensive smarts and worked hard to control her opponent. Also having a major impact on the Bears' defense was keeper, Katie Mulloy coming up with some big saves down the stretch and finishing the match with 5 total saves.
MSU will play host next Thursday, Sept. 15, as they face-off against the Saint Louis Billikens. The Bears' home opener will begin at 7 p.m. CT at Plaster Sports Complex.
