SPRINGFIELD -- Fairfield, Dartmouth and the remains of Hurricane Earl await the Field Hockey Bears this weekend, as head coach Dawn Callahan takes the team east for the Big Green Classic in Hanover, N.H.
The Bears will play the Stags Saturday, Sept. 4, and then face off against host school, the Dartmouth Big Green, Sunday. Both games will be a 1 p.m. start.
MSU is 1-0 on the young season after earning a 7-1 win in the season opener against Lindenwood. Fairfield is 0-2, while the Big Green makes their 2010 debut.
The weekend will be a good test for a young Bears team that played six newcomers against Lindenwood. Of the six, Casey Bayliss (Bathurst, NSW, Australia), Hillary Lawless (St. Louis, Mo.) and Laura Tavares (Oakville, Ontario, Canada) all scored goals, with Tavares notching two and an assist.
Veterans Amanda Miyashita (Sr., Richmond, B.C., Canada), Jennifer Portell (Sr., Edwardsville, Ill.) and Sarah Cusick (Jr., San Diego, Calif.) lead the squad on the season's first road trip. Against the Lions, Miyashita anchored a defense that allowed only one shot and Portell and Cusick provided the offensive punch, scoring one and two goals, respectively.
The Bears are 0-1 all-time against Dartmouth and 1-1 against Fairfield. Live stats will be available all weekend by visiting MissouriStateBears.com.
