SPRINGFIELD, Mo. -- Missouri State suffered an 8-2 Missouri Valley Conference baseball loss to Creighton Friday evening at Hammons Field in Springfield, committing three errors and stranding nine runners on base over the final three innings.
Creighton (18-13, 6-7 MVC) took the lead in the first after Trever Adams hit a two-out single and advanced home via catcher’s interference during the next batter, a balk and a passed ball.
The Bluejays scored two more in the fifth thanks to four singles, and added runs in the sixth and eighth when the Bears threw away a pair of balls that would have been inning-ending double plays. CU also scored three in the seventh on a two-out walk, stolen base, RBI single and two-run T.J. Roemmich homer.
Missouri State (15-21, 1-6) got a solo homer from
Curt Courtwright in the sixth as part of the senior’s three-hit day, and
Tyler Bean’s first career hit drove in
Travis McComack in the eighth. The Bears had many scoring chances late but left runners on first and second in the sixth, on the corners in the seventh, stranded the bases loaded in the eighth and left runners on second and third in the ninth.
Creighton’s Jonas Dufek (6-1) allowed six hits and a run in seven innings for the win, while the Bears’
Mike Kickham (4-5) struck out six in seven innings but allowed seven runs, five earned.
Aaron Conway and
Kevin Medrano each had two-hit days for MSU. Medrano extended his hitting streak to 18 games, tying for the ninth longest in school history.
The Bears and Jays meet again at 2 p.m. Saturday.
