Softball Bears Keep Rolling with Doubleheader Sweep

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. -- Sparked by a pair of newcomers and two more solid pitching performances, the Missouri State softball team swept a twin-bill Saturday afternoon at MSU Softball Field with a 4-1 win over Central Missouri and a 2-1 victory over Crowder.

Freshman Caitlin Chapin's one-out grand slam in the bottom of the first inning was all the Bears would need in game one, as sophomore right-hander Natalie Rose held the Jennies to just three hits in a complete-game effort.

Rose allowed UCM's lone tally in the fourth after Tarese Ely-Myers led off with a double and scored on a sacrifice fly from Krista Cummings. Rose would go on to retire the final 11 batters of the contest to close out the win for MSU.

The Bears fell behind Crowder early in game two, as the Lady 'Riders capitalized on a lead-off double in the first to take a 1-0 lead off senior righty Lauren McGinley.

But junior transfer Alaina Burkhart burned her former Crowder teammates with a two-out, two-run double in the bottom of the fourth to plate the Bears' only runs of the game.

McGinley held the Lady 'Riders in check, allowing just the first-inning run on five hits in six innings before fellow senior Lauren Supak came on to close out the game and earn the save with a scoreless seventh inning.

Next up, Missouri State will host Evangel in a 6 p.m., make-up game this Friday (Oct. 2) at MSU Softball Field.
