Senior Missouri State men's soccer player Johannes Demarzi was named Prairie Farms/Missouri Valley Conference Scholar-Athlete of the Week by the league office today.
A midfielder/defender for the Bears, Demarzi earned Missouri Valley Conference offensive player of the week honors while powering the Bears to a 4-0 win over Centenary (Sept. 16) and a 1-0 shutout triumph at sixth-ranked Creighton (Sept. 19).
Demarzi, who has a 3.37 cumulative grade-point average in political science, notched a goal and an assist in the MSU win over Centenary. At Creighton, he struck a corner kick that found Jordan Hoffman for the game-winner. From his position on the backline, he leads the Bears in assists with four.
To qualify for Prairie Farms/Missouri Valley Conference Scholar-Athlete of the Week laurels, student-athletes must carry a cumulative grade-point average of 3.20, completed at least one academic year at a Valley institution and must be at least a sophomore in academic standing. Redshirt freshmen and first-year junior college transfers are not eligible. In addition to the academic qualifications, student-athletes will be evaluated on their athletic performance for a one-week period.
Missouri State travels to Dallas, Texas for this week's SMU Tournament. The Bears will face Houston Baptist on Friday, a team Missouri State has never faced. The Bears wrap up the tournament against host, SMU, on Sunday.
