Baumann, Carlson Earn Academic All-America Honors

Missouri State junior southpaw Buddy Baumann and junior outfielder Ben Carlson have been selected as CoSIDA/ESPN The Magazine Academic All-Americans, it was announced Tuesday. Carlson appears on the second team and is the fourth Bear to become a repeat choice after appearing on the third team a year ago. Baumann is a third-teamer and becomes MSU’s 14th Academic All-American in baseball.

Carlson was a first-team all-Missouri Valley Conference pick this season and concluded the year with a .301 average and MVC-leading 16 homers to go with 51 RBIs. The Topeka, Kan., native hit for extra bases with 31 of his 56 hits on the season, drew 28 walks and was hit by 22 pitches, ranking one shy of the school record. He has a 3.79 GPA in general business.

Baumann is the 2009 MVC Pitcher of the Year and completed the season with an 11-1 record and 3.23 ERA. The Rogersville, Mo., native is the third pitcher in school history to win 11 games in a season, and his 101 strikeouts in 2009 rank fifth all-time at MSU. The lefty held opponents to a .220 batting average this season and has a 3.36 GPA while pursuing a history education degree.

The Bears finished the 2009 campaign at 34-20 overall and 17-5 in conference play to win the MVC.

To be eligible for Academic All-America consideration, a student-athlete must be a varsity starter or key reserve, maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.30 on a scale of 4.00, have reached sophomore athletic and academic standing at his current institution and be nominated by his sports information director.
