The Missouri State volleyball team opened the Carolina Classic Friday evening with a 25-13, 25-22, 25-18 loss to host North Carolina inside the Smith Center in Chapel Hill, N.C. The Tar Heels owned the first set of the match, hitting .435 with 10 kills and no errors on 23 attempts while the Bears used a late charge to break even in hitting with seven kills and seven errors in the 25-13 loss. The second set was more of the same early on as UNC was up 10-2 just 12 points in. The Bears fell behind by as many as 13 at 19-6 but battled back to make things interesting and almost send the match into intermission in a 1-1 tie. From that point, MSU outscored the Tar Heels 16-5, but UNC called the timeout at match point and came out to force the Missouri State error and take the 25-22 win. North Carolina jumped out to a 19-6 lead in the third set as well, and for the second time in the match, completed a set without an attack error, recording 13 kills on 26 swings to hit .500 in the final set and .309 for the match. Missouri State hit just .073 and failed to have a player reach double figures in kills or digs. Sophomore
Cara Hackmann was the offense’s top performer, hitting .333 with nine kills, and also led the team with nine digs. MSU fell to 1-3 on the season and UNC moved to 1-3 with its first victory. The Bears play two matches in the Carolina Classic Saturday, meeting Davidson at 9 a.m. and Georgetown at 3:30 p.m. Statistics not available from the University of North Carolina
