Missouri State sophomore QB Cody Kirby (Rogers, Ark.) was named Missouri Valley Football Conference Offensive Player of the Week the league announced Sunday.
Kirby brought the Bears back from a 26-14 fourth-quarter deficit to defeat Illinois State, 34-28, on the road. Kirby ran for three touchdowns and passed for another -- a season-long 77-yard touchdown strike to Justin Fuselier -- and accounted for 313 yards total offense. His three rushing touchdowns matched a career high, as he averaged 6.6 yards per carry on the afternoon with a career high 59 ground yards. Through the air, he was 17-for-27 without an interception, while recording his third 200-yard game of the season (254). He has thrown a touchdown pass in seven consecutive games, which ties the second-best streak in MSU history. After becoming the fastest Bears' quarterback to the 2500-yard career passing mark last week, he jumped into a tie for sixth place on the team's career touchdown pass list (21) and became just the ninth Bears' player to record more than 3000 yards total offense in a career. He has now played 17 games at MSU, including 14 starts (7-7). The win over Illinois State gave Missouri State back-to-back league victories for the first time since 2001, and also gave the Bears their first road conference win since 2004.
