Missouri State’s volleyball team picked up a pair of 3-0 victories over Tennessee Tech and Tennessee-Chattanooga Saturday to extend its winning streak to three in a row and claim the championship at the Comfort Inns & Suites Challenge in Chattanooga, Tenn.
MSU senior setter Katelyn Panzau was awarded tournament MVP honors after helping the Bears improve to 8-2 on the season, while Jamie Adams and Sara Thomas joined her on the all-tournament squad as all three seniors were recognized.
Offense was the story all day, as the Bears hit at least .314 in all six games, made only 11 errors in each match, and combined for a .357 attack efficiency in the two matches.
The Bears rolled to a 2-0 lead in the morning match against Tennessee Tech, winning the first two games 30-27 and 30-19. The pesky Golden Eagles fought off four Missouri State match points in the third game before eventually falling 34-32 when Panzau provided the final kill.
Adams had 14 kills and a single error to hit .433 against TTU, and was joined in double figures by Sara Staubach with 13 and Shayla Patrick with a season-high 12 kills on .500 hitting. Panzau dished out 43 assists and the Bears blocked 11 Tennessee Tech attacks.
Against Chattanooga, all six MSU starters hit at least .303 as the team claimed the tournament title with a 30-24, 30-17, 30-25 victory.
Thomas and Adams paced the offense with 13 kills each, and Staubach and Patrick added eight and seven kills, respectively, without committing an error.
Panzau and Thomas each tallied seven blocks for the Bears, who finished with 13.5 for the match, and Cara Hackmann (13), Nikki Vandepopulier (11) and Terri Del Conte (10) all topped the 10-dig mark.
The Bears held UTC to .131 hitting and were blocked on just one attack attempt.
Missouri State closes out the long weekend Sunday at 4 p.m. against 25th-ranked and undefeated Middle Tennessee State (10-0) at the Blue Raiders’ home in Murfreesboro.
