Former Missouri State left-handed pitcher Ross Detwiler became the 10th Bear called up the majors when the Washington Nationals added him to their 40-man roster Tuesday.
After becoming MSU’s highest draft pick ever as the sixth overall selection in June, Detwiler began his professional career with the Gulf Coast League Nationals, pitching 12 innings in four starts with 15 strikeouts and a 2.25 ERA.
He then moved to Class A Potomac, pitching 21.1 innings and logging a 2-2 record and 4.22 ERA. The southpaw was 2-0 and allowed one earned run in 14 innings in his last three appearances with Potomac. He finished a combined 2-2 with a 3.51 ERA in the minors.
Detwiler is the third Nationals player in the last five years to be drafted and called up to the majors in the same season, joining Chad Cordero and Ryan Zimmerman.
