Missouri State senior softball player Katie Martin has been named to the 2007 Missouri Valley Conference Scholar-Athlete first team, as announced by the league office Tuesday. Martin was one of 16 softball student-athletes named to the first team and one of nine repeat selections. Voting for the scholar-athlete team is conducted by the league’s sports information directors.
Martin, a native of Baldwin City, Kan., has maintained a 3.93 grade-point average in medical technology. The centerfielder led the Bears this season with a .307 batting average and posted team-best totals in hits (46), runs (30), doubles (9), and on-base percentage (.412). Martin also stole 16 bases to rank second in the MVC. In her first season in center field, Martin committed only one error and recorded a .986 fielding percentage.
Martin is also one of ten finalists for the Lowe’s Senior CLASS Award, an honor that acknowledges high character and success on and off the field. Creighton’s Jamie Reiss, also named to the MVC Scholar-Athlete first team, is also a finalist for the Lowe’s Senior CLASS Award. Fans can continue to vote for Katie at www.seniorclassaward.com. Voting concludes on May 23. Fan vote totals will be combined with votes from media, coaches and sponsors to determine the recipient of the award, which will be announced during the Women’s College World Series.
Martin was named to the All-MVC second team last week for the second straight season as well. She was also an MVC Scholar-Athlete first team selection last season as a junior.
Missouri State concluded the season with a 2-1 loss to Bradley in the first round of the MVC Tournament on May 10, finishing with a 21-29 record. Martin was selected to the MVC All-Tournament team, as she recorded a hit and scored the Bears' run in the loss to Bradley. Martin was one of three seniors on the Bears’ roster.
