Goals from Kate Hercules and Kate Blair led the Missouri State women's soccer team to a 2-0 shutout victory over the University of Arkansas-Little Rock Friday evening at Cooper Sports Complex. The Bears improve to 6-2-0 with their fifth straight victory, while the Trojans drop to 2-4-0.
Hercules put the Bears on the board in the 10th minute of the game, heading the rebound from her own shot past UALR's goalkeeper. The rest of the half remained scoreless. UALR's Jessica Beaver blasted three shots at Missouri State goalkeeper Jackie Jasper in the first half who saved all three for the Bears.
At 67:43, junior forward Blair netted her second goal of the season off a pass from Chelsea Anderson who received the ball from Caroline Sweeney. Anderson and Sweeney both marked their first assist on the season.
Sweeney led Missouri State's offense with six shots on the night, including four on goal. Defender Hercules posted four shots, Anderson had three and Blair recorded two. Angela Parsons, Allison Osmundson, Meghan Cassady, Megan Beebe and Samantha Aguilar combined for a total of seven shots, giving the Bears 22 total in the match. UALR posted half as many and was limited to only five shots on goal courtesy of the Bears' defense.
The Bears' offense has been aggressive in Missouri State's five-game winning streak, taking 20-plus shots in four out of five matches. The five consecutive victories is one shy of the school record of six set 10 years ago in the Bears' premier season.
Jasper is credited with her third shutout of the season and second straight, and has spent every minute in goal for Missouri State. Ashley Boccarossa takes the loss for UALR and dips to 2-4.
Missouri State will battle Eastern Illinois on Sunday, Sept. 17, at Plaster Field at 1 p.m.
