Newcomer Caroline Sweeney netted her first Missouri State game-winning goal in the first minute of the second overtime to give the Bears the 3-2 victory over the University of Arkansas in the first regular season match, Friday evening at Cooper Sports Complex in Springfield, Mo. The win marks Missouri State with a 1-0 season record.

The Lady'Backs were the first to score as Allison Harris headed the ball into the open goal off a corner kick by Rachel Smith in the 13th minute. The Bears answered back as two freshman paired together to breeze the ball past the Arkansas goalkeeper. Nicole Logan earned her first collegiate assist on the play while Emily Wright posted her first collegiate goal with just 40 seconds remaining in the first half.

A header by Sweeney, from Meghan Cassady, to the far post would give the Bears their second goal on the night with eight minutes to go in the second half. Arkansas fought back with only 1:30 to play in the contest, when Kathleen Paulson hit a 30-yard free kick just below the top bar to tie the match at 2-2.

Freshman Samantha Aguilar served the ball to Sweeney who put an end to the match with her second goal of the night in the first minute of the second overtime.

The Lady'Backs matched the Bears with 12 shots including seven shots on goal for Arkansas and six for Missouri State. Sweeney recorded six shots for the Bears with half on goal, including the two scores.

MSU goalkeeper Jackie Jasper (1-0) earned her first win on the season as UA goalkeeper Carrie Dillsaver (0-1) was handed her first loss.

The Missouri State women's soccer team will play at Oklahoma State on Sunday, August 27, in Stillwater, Okla., at 1 p.m.
