The Missouri State volleyball team used a balanced offense and a gutty game two performance to earn a 3-0 win at MVC rival Evansville Saturday night at the Carson Center in Evansville, Ind. Game scores in favor of MSU were 30-16, 32-30 and 30-24.
The Bears moved to 13-4 overall and 6-1 in the Valley with the victory, and now sport a perfect 5-0 record in MVC road matches this season. UE fell to 10-9 and 4-4 in league play.
The match was essentially decided in a game two that saw the Bears fight off two match points to come away with a 32-30 win and take a 2-0 match lead into intermission. Jamie Adams provided the clinching kill, one of nine for the match, and Erin O’Connor had five kills without an error in the period.
The Bears easily won the opening game of the match 30-16. Adeana McAfee was everywhere defensively for the Bears, digging 14 balls in the frame and finishing the match with 18. Sarah Lansing had four kills on five swings and would finish the match with eight putaways against no errors.
The teams played evenly to 10-10 in game three before MSU went on a 5-0 run and kept the Aces at arm’s length for the remainder of the game, winning 30-24. The Bears hit .385 in the stanza. Lansing had the final two kills and O’Connor had another errorless game with five kills. O’Connor finished the match with a team-high 14 kills on .448 hitting.
Sara Thomas nearly finished with a double-double for the Bears, turning in nine kills and 10 digs, while Shanda Harper added seven kills. Katelyn Panzau had 43 assists and 16 digs.
Missouri State outhit the Purple Aces, .259-.118.
The Bears return to action Tuesday evening with a 6 p.m. match at in-state rival Southeast Missouri State.
