Missouri State’s volleyball held Valparaiso to under .100 hitting in each game to earn a 3-0 (30-20, 30-26, 30-28) sweep of the visiting Crusaders in non-conference action Sunday afternoon at Hammons Student Center in Springfield.
The Bears moved to 19-6 on the season while Valpo dropped to 16-11.
Missouri State’s most efficient game was the first, as the team hit .275 in a 30-20 victory. MSU’s top three attackers, Erin O’Connor, Shanda Harper and Jamie Adams were just that, combining for 12 kills on .385 hitting in game one. Harper would finish the match with a team-high 11 kills and .348 attack percentage to go along with seven blocks.
MSU jumped ahead 5-1 in game two before Valparaiso went on a five-point run to take a one-point lead. That would be the theme for the rest of the period, as Valpo came back to tie from two more four-point deficits before Missouri State took the final four points to win 30-26 and take a 2-0 lead into intermission.
The Bears fell behind 10-4 to begin the third game and never took the lead until 28-27. Valpo tied the issue at 28 before O’Connor and Harper combined for one of MSU’s 11.5 blocks to end the game and match with a 30-28 game three win.
Adams led all players with 14 digs, a career high, and Sarah Lansing matched her career best set five times previously with three of Missouri State’s four service aces.
MSU hit .203 for the match and held Valpo to .082, as the Crusaders committed 35 attack errors to 16 for the Bears.
The Bears close out their five-match homestand next weekend with conference matches against Evansville (11-13, 5-8) on Friday and Southern Illinois (11-12, 6-7) on Saturday. First serve for both matches is set for 7 p.m. at Hammons.
