Sandy Seale was an outstanding distance runner who joined the Missouri State cross country and track and field programs as women's athletics was moving into the NCAA Division I ranks in all sports after earlier competition in the AIAW. Running for the Bears of track and cross country coach Jeff Berryessa, Seale still has the second-fastest 5K time in MSU cross country history, from a clocking of 17:36 minutes at the Ozark Invitational (later changed to the MSU Distance Classic). Seale, a native of Imperial, Missouri, began her MSU career in 1981 as she helped the women's cross country team to a Missouri AIAW Championship with a sixth place individual finish. She was fifth at the Region 6 Championship and helped the Bears to a second place team finish. In her next two cross country seasons, Seale helped guide the Bears to a pair of third place finishes in the Gateway conference. In track and field, she was on the relay team that holds the school record in the two mile relay with a time of 9:43.9. She was a four-year member of both the cross country and track and field teams.
