Fifth-year player who looks to be a good short-yardage back for the Bears this fall as a seasoned veteran and solid competitor ... Tallied 52 yards on 10 carries in the team[apos]s Maroon and White Game (4/26/14).

2013: Earned playing time in first 6 games of the season before an injury sidelined him the rest of the way ... Had 14 yards on 4 carries in the win over No. 24 Illinois State (9/28/13) ... Recorded a special teams tackle in season opener against Northwestern State (8/29/13) ... Named to Athletic Director[apos]s Honor Roll for fall 2013 and spring 2014 semesters ... Also named to MVFC Honor Roll ... Recorded 36 yards on 11 carries in Maroon and White Game (4/20/13) ... Compiled 100 yards on 31 carries during 2013 spring series.

2012: Returned to the offensive backfield for the 2012 campaign and played in 5 ball games, primarily on special teams ... Carried 3 times for 17 yards in home win over Western Illinois (10/27/12) ... Recorded an assisted tackle on special teams in the narrow loss to No. 1 North Dakota State (11/3/12) ... Earned MSU Athletic Director[apos]s Honor Roll honors in the fall of 2012 and spring of 2013 ... Had 20 carries for 45 yards in three spring (2012) scrimmages, including 10 carries for 30 yards in the second scrimmage.

2011: Moved from running back to outside linebacker, but injuries kept Mattes sidelined again during his redshirt freshman campaign.

2010: Earned a redshirt after an injury-plagued freshman season.

High School: A powerful runner with great speed and athleticism, Mattes made the transition from receiver to running back for his senior year at Lebanon High School ... Earned all-district, academic all-conference, and All-Ozarks Conference honors for the second straight season for Coach Will Christian ... In 2009, he had 200 carries for 1,224 yards, second-most in school history, and scored a school-record 20 touchdowns while helping the Yellowjackets to a 5-5 record ... Was named the team[apos]s offensive MVP ... In 2008, he had 45 receptions for 486 yards as the team[apos]s feature receiver and garnered first-team all-conference and all-district recognition ...Helped lead the Yellowjackets to their first-ever playoff appearance in 2008 ... Was an all-state sprinter and triple jumper.
