Volleyball Opens CUSA Play with 3-1 Victory Over FIU

SPRINGFIELD – Missouri State had a season-high 18 blocks and rallied from late deficits in each of the final two sets for a come-from-behind 3-1 victory over visiting FIU Friday at Hammons Student Center in the Conference USA opener for both squads.
Chloe Judd (8), Hannah Redrow (8) and Lexi Weinberg (7) all tied or established career highs for blocks, helping the Bears improve to 10-3 overall with their ninth win the last 10 matches. Set scores in favor of Mo State went 17-25, 25-21, 30-28, 27-25 and ended a seven-match win streak for the Panthers (9-5).
After FIU held the Bears to a .000 attacking efficiency in the opening set, Missouri State's offense kicked into gear to hit .277 for the remainder of the match, beginning with a .393 showing in the second set. Jenna Walters led the way in the second by going 5-for-6 on the attack and finished with a season-best 11 kills.
Mo State fell behind 14-8 in the third and grabbed a 19-18 lead on consecutive Hannah Gardner kills, then trailed 24-22 before each side fought off three set points, with a Weinberg stuff securing the 30-28 win for the Bears.
The Panthers led 18-14 in the fourth, Judd had consecutive blocks for a 19-18 lead, and the score was tied at points 21 through 25, setting up a Redrow and Walters block assist to gain match point before an FIU attack sailed wide for the win.
Gardner ended with 13 kills, 20 assists and nine digs, while freshman Halle Rillie added 19 assists and a career-high five kills. Brooke Eslinger had 14 digs and Kya Johnson added 13.
FIU led 64-51 in total kills but were forced into 33 errors by the MSU defense.
The Bears and Panthers meet again at 1 p.m. Saturday, with a celebration of Hammons Student Center's 50th birthday scheduled. Tickets for home games can be purchased here, and Missouri State students are admitted free of charge.
