Bears Come Up Short in 1-0 Road Loss at WKU

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. - Missouri State goalkeeper Kate Lewis finished with eight saves, but Western Kentucky broke through early in the second half to hand the Bears a 1-0 Conference USA setback here Sunday.
Missouri State (3-7-2, 0-2-1 CUSA) kept the Hilltoppers off the board through the opening 54 minutes before Alyvia Walls delivered the match's lone goal at the 54:36 mark. WKU improved to 8-1-4 overall and 2-1-0 in league play.
Lewis kept the Bears within striking distance throughout the afternoon with eight saves on nine WKU shots on target.
Missouri State generated its first opportunity in the 25th minute when Brooke Cattoor sent an attempt wide right. Marleigh Allen and Ariya Barton added attempts late in the period as the Bears went into the break deadlocked, 0-0.
WKU applied pressure immediately out of the intermission with Lewis making saves on Makenna Egan and Danielle Lewin in the first four minutes of the half. The Hilltoppers followed with three corner kicks over the next four minutes before Walls put the home side in front with her first goal of the season off an assist from Lewin.
The Bears looked for an equalizer down the stretch and got their best opportunity in the 82nd minute when Maggie O'Keefe put a shot on frame, but WKU goalkeeper Mia Riddick made the save to preserve the advantage. It was Missouri State's only shot on goal of the afternoon.
Western Kentucky finished with a 17-5 advantage in shots and a 9-1 edge in attempts on goal while also earning all six corner kicks. Lewis collected four saves in each half for the Bears.
Missouri State returns home next Sunday, Oct. 11, to host Middle Tennessee in Conference USA action at 1 p.m. at Betty and Bobby Allison South Stadium. Admission is free.
