Men’s Soccer Keeps Share of First Place Headed Into Final Weekend
October 28, 2026 | Men's Soccer
SPRINGFIELD - Missouri State men's soccer (11-1-3, 4-1-2) beat UAB (5-4-5, 2-2-3), with a 2-0 scoreline, concluding the Bears' regular season home schedule on Wednesday night at Betty & Bobby Allison South Stadium.
The victory marks the Bears 11th win of the season, as well as their 100th win since the start of the 2019 season. It also keeps the Bears tied for first place in the American Conference with one match remaining.
"Firstly, I just want to congratulate the team tonight. It was a good win to finish up the home regular season, and I congratulate UAB on a good season so far," stated head coach Michael Seabolt. "Consistency is built on the on the hard work of really good players and really good coaches and I'm just fortunate to be a part of it. We just keep trying to lead and do things the right way, it's just great for this program and this university that we can represent and show what a quality program we can have here at Missouri State."
In the first half it was senior Joey Dawson who shined just two minutes after being subbed on at the same time as his brother, sophomore Lucas Dawson. In the 33rd minute, after a perfect cross from fifth-year Martin Gasztos, Joey found the back of the net to put the Bears in the lead and earn his second goal in the maroon and white.
"It's something we have spoken about since we were young. We've always said growing up it'd be good to one day play on the same team and it's a good feeling to play with my little brother and it's even better when we win," Joey stated.
"Like Joey said it's something we never thought would happen, but it has happened," continued Lucas. "It's something we practiced a lot in the garden with our little brother, with our dad, with our uncles, with our mum even sometimes. Joey is someone I've always looked up to obviously being that he is my big brother and it's good to be able to play with him and to share a goal with him as well."
In the second half, the Bears remained focused and bided their time until the 70th minute, when another opportunity was created to score. Senior Daniel Souza placed the ball in just the right spot for junior Victor Wachowicz to swoop in and find the back of the net for a 2-0 lead.
Blazer Luke Alexander attempted UAB's lone shot on goal in the 82nd minute for a comeback, but it was saved by sophomore Danny Cullum who tallied his first shutout of the season.
Missouri State ended the night with five shots, of which three were on goal, while UAB ended with five shots, of which one was on goal. The Bears tallied five corner kicks, to the Blazers' three. Both Mo State and UAB made one save each.
With the victory, the Bears have locked up a top-three seed for the American Conference Tournament, which runs Nov. 6-14 at campus sites. Mo State remains in a three-way tie for first place with one game remaining, sharing the top spot in the standings with Tulsa and Charlotte who share identical 4-1-2 conference records (14 points) with the Bears.
The regular season concludes on Sunday with the Bears traveling to Charlotte at 5 p.m. (Central) and Tulsa hosting Memphis at 7 p.m.
"Charlotte is a top team and we're both highly ranked, both NCAA level teams and it's really going to be a great battle. The big thing is just to get rested and get ready for Charlotte and it'll be a great match up," said Seabolt.
