Men’s Basketball Adds Three Commitments

SPRINGFIELD -- Missouri State men's basketball coach Cuonzo Martin has received National Letters of Intent and financial aid agreements from three more standout players to add to his arsenal for the upcoming season.
 
Recently committing to the Bears for the 2024-25 season are:
  • Jurrell Baldwin (F, 6-7, 200, Fr., Chicago, Ill., Hyde Park Career Academy)
  • Wesley Oba (F, 6-8, 215, Sr., Manchester, England, Loreto College High, Delaware St.)
  • Mozae Downing-Rivers (G, 6-6, 190, Jr., Lawrence, Kan., Free State High, Barton CC)
 
"We're excited to introduce Jurrell, Wes, and Mozae to our basketball family," Martin said. "These three talented, driven student-athletes embody the values of family, togetherness, and commitment. With their determination, skills, and abilities, they're primed to make a significant impact on our path to victory."
 
The spring National Letter of Intent signing period for Division I basketball began on April 17 and continues through May 15.
 
 
Jurrell Baldwin
Baldwin was one of the biggest prep breakout stars last season in the state of Illinois, earning IBCA Class 3A All-State second-team honors as a senior at Hyde Park Career Academy in Chicago. He also made the Chicago Sun-Times All-Area and All-City teams in 2024 while leading his Thunderbirds to a 21-9 overall record and IHSA state playoff appearance.
 
As a junior in 2023, he averaged 19 points, 13 rebounds and 3 blocks per game while earning all-area and all-city laurels for a 24-7 Hyde Park squad. He previously played at Homewood-Flossmoor in the Chicago Public League and Phoenix Prep in Arizona. He also held scholarship offers from Murray State and Saint Louis.
 
 
Mozae Downing-Rivers
Downing-Rivers started 70 straight games at Barton Community College in Great Bend, Kan., where he combined to average 8.3 points, 3.7 rebounds and 5.7 assists per game over the last two seasons for coach Jeremy Coombs. In 2024, the standout point guard led the Cougars to a 36-1 record and NJCAA Division I national championship.
 
His sophomore season also saw Downing-Rivers collect 212 assists (5.7 per game), including 7 scoring passes in the national championship game win over Triton. He also was awarded 2024 NJCAA Men's Basketball All-Star laurels. As a freshman, he earned All-KJCCC/All-Region VI second-team honors with a league-best 5.7 assists per game for a 24-9 conference runner-up team, while shooting 40 percent from beyond the arc and scoring 10.8 points per night.
 
Originally from Lawrence, Kan., he stood out at Lawrence Free State High School where he helped the Firebirds to a 23-2 record and third-place finish in Class 6A his senior year.
 
 
Wesley Oba
Oba averaged 6.2 points and 6.2 rebounds per game and tied for the team lead with 16 blocks in his only season at Delaware State University in 2023-24. He also shot 54.5 percent from the field and had a season-high 15 points in a game against East Carolina and 14 rebounds in a MEAC Tournament win over North Carolina Central.
The native of Manchester, England also played a year-and-a-half at Florida Southwestern in Ft. Myers where he averaged 4.7 points and 5.3 rebounds per game as a sophomore with a career-high of 19 points vs. Florida Coastal and four games with 10 or more rebounds. He began his collegiate career at Division II University of Sioux Falls.
 
A rugged defender, Oba shot 55 percent from the field in 2022-23 at Florida Southwestern which placed him the top five in the conference. In 2021-22, he averaged 5.3 points and 8.3 rebounds per game at Sioux Falls, notching a pair of double-doubles in back-to-back games against Augustana and Wayne State. 
 

 
 
The recent additions join three previous signees already announced by Martin:

  • Sam Murray II (F, 6-9, 200, Jr., Gulfport, Miss., Harrison Central High, Murray State)
