Bear Golfers Picked Fifth in MVC Race, Set to Start Spring Season

The Missouri State men's golf team is set to begin its spring season next week at the Bentwater Intercollegiate in Montgomery, Texas. Sam Houston State plays host to the event at the Miller Course at Bentwater Yacht and Country Club just north of Houston, with teams playing 36 holes Monday and 18 on Tuesday (Feb. 12-13). Coach Neal Stafford's Bears are coming off a productive fall season and have just been picked to place fifth at the Missouri Valley Conference Championship in April in the preseason coaches' poll. MSU notched a pair of top-five finishes in the fall, including second at the Grover Page Classic, and were led by senior Hampus Wijkstrom, who posted a 69.67 scoring average, a win at the Page Classic and a runner-up at SIUE. Wijkstrom also set the new school 54-hole scoring record at SIUE when he shot 66-70-65--201. Senior Eric Schuessler checked in with a 72.20 scoring mark in the fall, while sophomore Christian Rischer and three-time all-conference performer Max Kreikemeier posted marks of 73.33 and 73.40, respectively.
Wijkstrom, Schuessler and Kreikemeier will be joined in the lineup for this first tournament by junior Ludvig Wijkstrom and freshman Max Bowman.
As for the preseason poll, Illinois State is the unanimous choice of the Valley coaches with 10 first-place votes and 100 total points. Valparaiso is the pick for second with 88 points, with Southern Illinois (82), Belmont (67) and the Bears (60) rounding out the top five. Drake is tabbed for sixth with 46 points, then Murray State (40), Northern Iowa (30), Evansville (22) and Bradley (15) rounding out the poll.
