Tennis Bears Battle Elements to Beat ULM, 4-2
February 23, 2024 | Women's Tennis
SPRINGFIELD – Despite battling fierce wind, the Missouri State tennis team extended its home win streak to four with a 4-2 win over ULM on Friday.
Â
The Bears (5-4) started the match on the right foot with two doubles wins over the Warhawks (1-3). After dropping the match at No. 2, the duo of Tuana Gunal and Juliette Robinson sealed a win at No. 3. The pair defeated ULM's team of Raquel Alvaro and Mackenzie King, 6-0.
Â
Cristina Flaquer and Nicole Ross then closed out the doubles matches and secured the first point for MSU with a 6-2 win over the Warhawks duo of Tamara Bachmann and Angela Del Campo Suarez.
Â
The wind conditions really picked up as the singles matches began, but it didn't stop the Bears from emerging victorious on their home courts.
Â
In singles, Nicole Ross got the ball rolling with a win at No. 6. The junior took the first set of her match 6-3 over Alvaro. She did not let up, putting together another dominant showing in the second set to win 6-1 and capture MSU's second point of the day.
Â
Mary Houston put the Bears in position to win the match with her win at No. 2. Houston lost the first set 6-4 to ULM's Mariam Hatem but battled back to take the second by the same score. The senior kept her foot on the gas to sweep the third set and win 6-0.
Â
Cristina Flaquer's win at No. 1 ended the day for ULM. Like Houston's match, Flaquer lost the first set to Klinteby, 6-4. The Barcelona native didn't let the first-set loss deter her as she rallied in the second set to win 6-3, before going on to win the third and final set, 6-3, and seal the win for the Bears.
Â
"I am incredibly proud of the girls today," head coach Ellie Burger said. "The conditions weren't ideal, but we found a way. I am excited to see them compete again on Sunday."
Â
The Bears are back at home again on Sunday to face SEMO at 11:00 a.m. Admission is free at Cooper Tennis Complex.
