October 26, 2024

SPRINGFIELD - Missouri State women's swimming & diving completed the weekend sweep of the Drury Panthers on Saturday at Breech Pool. The Bears took the win, 130-74, after all the swimming results were tabulated. Men's swimming & diving suffered a second loss in as many days to Drury, 132.5-66.5.

The women's team continued its hot streak from yesterday's meet against Drury at Hammons Student Center Pool by opening Saturday's meet with a win on the 200-yard medley relay (1:41.75). That time leads the Missouri Valley Conference this season. The Bears also took the win in the 200-yard freestyle relay (1:35.09) to sweep the women's relay events for the weekend.

The Bears swept the podium in the 1,000-yard freestyle for the second straight day with sophomore Lindsey Hervey leading the way again with a time of 10:10.61, less than half a second off her personal best. Junior Sophia Coleta (10.22.61) and sophomore Claire Culberson (10:27.11) completed the top three.

Hervey earned her second win of the meet and third of the weekend in the 500-yard freestyle (4:57.92), surpassing Coleta's MVC-leading time of 4:58.62 she earned yesterday. Coleta also improved her time on Saturday with a 4:58.12 which was good for second.

"After weeks of hard training my teammates and I have been putting in, I wanted to show the hard work pay off," Hervey said. "We all went into the meet wanting to have fun so I wanted to continue that energy into Day 2."

Junior Lana Janson followed up her 100-yard freestyle win on Friday by also taking the event on Saturday with an improved conference-leading time of 50.52. She also won the 200-yard freestyle on Saturday. Janson defeated Mellie Wijk, Great Lakes Valley Conference leader in the event, by two-tenths of a second to win (1:49.00).

Sophomore Olivia Sala won her first career individual event in the 400-yard individual medley (4:22.69), just .06 seconds off her personal best from last season's MVC Championships.

After winning the 50-yard freestyle on Friday, sophomore Caitlyn Friebe returned to her winning ways in the 100-yard backstroke (55.35). She defeated the next-best finisher, Drury's Lexie Waller, by over a second and a half.

Fifth-year Samantha Roemer added to her successful weekend after three wins on Friday with a victory in the 100-yard butterfly (54.42) improving on her time that already led the conference.

The Bears divers once again owned the 1-meter and 3-meter dives. Sophomore Maggie Arceneaux replicated her Friday win in the 1-meter dive by resetting her personal best score of 275.40. Her score is the sixth-highest after six dives at the 1-meter height in Missouri State history. Senior Courtney Stanbury finished second with a personal best of 261.38.

Stanbury won her first diving event of the year with a personal best score in the 3-meter dive (262.58). Arceneaux also broke her best score that she set on Friday with a 254.33, good for second.

"I was very excited to compete as well as we did and get some personal bests along with my teammates," Arceneaux said. "We all competed very well this weekend and are looking forward to our next meet."

On the men's side, junior Lucas Chadwell won his first event of the season in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 20.43, which was .04 seconds faster than his second-place result in the event last night behind sophomore Matvei Chesakov.

"Winning my first individual event this season is a testament to the hard work and dedication of our entire team," Chadwell said. "Together, we pushed each other to excel, and I'm proud to represent our school in this achievement. Here's to more successes ahead."

Senior Brunno Suzuki-Tomiyama completed the Bears' sweep in the 400 IM with a winning time of 4:02.27, besting his MVC-leading time he earned against Southern Illinois earlier this month (4:02.42).

Junior Luigi Maciel da Silva continued his dominance in breaststroke events, winning the 100-yard variety with a time of 54.56. It is his fourth win of the season, evenly split across the 100- and 200-yard breaststroke.
