April 11, 2023 | Women's Golf
BROKEN ARROW, Okla. -- Led by an individual runner-up finish by senior Abby Cavaiani, Missouri State's women's golf team captured third place here Tuesday at the ORU Spring Invitational.
The Bears (302-305-287--894) edged out Northern Colorado by one stroke for third place in the 12-team field. Sam Houston (-7) and host Oral Roberts (+12) topped the field with fellow Missouri Valley foe Drake finishing in 10th.
Missouri State's 287 score in the final round matched a season-best.
Cavaiani (73-71-69--213) finished two strokes behind Sam Houston's Leah Alberto for the individual title. ORU's Lydia Swan also matched Cavaiani's total to share runner-up honors.
The MoState senior held a one-stroke lead over Alberto with 10 holes to play, but bogeyed holes 13 and 14 to slip behind. She picked up a stroke down the stretch and cut her deficit to one stroke with a hole to play. But Alberto birdied her final hole (18) while Cavaiani carded an even-par on her last hole of the event (No. 3) to post a season-best round of 69 and bring home second place.
MSU's Kayla Pfitzner (72-74-75--221) tied for 11th to help put the Bears among the top three teams at The Club at Indian Springs. Faith Belmear (79-77-73--229) and Allison Bray (81-83-70--234) also contributed to the team finish with finishes in 28th and 41st place, respectively, while Kiser Pannier (78-89-79--246) placed 67th.
The Bears also had four individual competitors, paced by Arielle Keating (72-82-73--227) in 23rd, Johanna Wollenhaupt (80-76-75--231) in 35th, Faith Hopkins (72-82-80--234) in 41st and Helena Bal (78-87-74--240) in 59th.
Coach Kevin Kane now prepares his squad for the MVC Championship in Waterloo, Ill., April 16-18, in hopes of returning the Bears to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2018. A four-time All-MVC selection, Cavaiani won the MVC individual title in 2019 and also owns top-five finishes in 2021 (2nd) and 2022 (4th).
