DES MOINES, Iowa – The Missouri State women's tennis team (5-13, 0-4 MVC) came up short Saturday afternoon here, falling to Drake (10-7, 3-1 MVC) by a final score of 7-0.
The dual began with the Bulldogs taking each of the doubles matches, 6-1. In flight two, DU's Oria Parkins-Godwin and Ines Stephani defeated Mary Houston and Tiera Jarmond, followed by Drake's Rebecca Ehn and Elizabete Klavinska taking out Silva Avakian and Mary Houston in the No. 3 slot. To conclude doubles play, the Bulldogs' Mille Haagensen and Darinka Stepan downed Diana Cabrera and Alyson Piskulic in the No. 1 position.
After going up 1-0, Drake kept pace with victories in flights two, five and one to clinch the dual. Drake's Haagensen (No. 2) took down Jarmond, 6-0, 6-0, DU's Parkins-Godwin (No. 5) defeated Piskulic, 6-1. 6-1, and the Bulldogs' Stephani (No. 1) won over Cabrera, 6-2, 6-3.
Playing out the remaining singles matches, Drake's Stepan (No. 4) emerged victorious over Robinson, 6-4, 6-1, while DU's Klavinska (No. 3) defeated Houston, 7-5, 6-4. Avakian showed fight for the Bears in the final remaining match, as she came up short in a 10-point tiebreaker in lieu of a third set, falling to the Bulldogs' Jyun-Yi Lee in flight six, 1-6, 6-4, 7-6 (10-5).
Up next, Missouri State takes on Northern Iowa Sunday at 10 a.m. in Cedar Falls, Iowa.
