SPRINGFIELD – The Missouri State women's tennis team won six matches en route to a 5-1 victory over Missouri Western State here Friday afternoon.

"Really proud of how the girls came out and took care of business," head coach Ellie Burger said. "We were incredibly disciplined and focused, and we're going to build on this win and carry it into tomorrow."

The Bears (5-7) wasted no time securing the doubles point with two-straight victories in flights one and two. The duo of Diana Cabrera and Alyson Piskulic defeated MWSU's Ariella Curci/Isabella MacGibbon, 6-4,  in the No. 1 slot after the tandem of Sandra Lukacova and Juliette Robinson downed the Griffons' Anya Chavez and Anais Peralta Criado, 6-3.

In singles, Mary Houston gave MoState a 2-0 advantage when she took out MWSU's MacGibbon, 6-1, 6-3, in the No. 2 position. Next, Robinson defeated the Griffons' Cristina Granero Boj, 6-1, 6-3, in flight three. The clinching match for MSU came at No. 4 singles when Lukacova got past MWSU's Peralta Criado, 6-4, 6-3, to snap the Bears' four-dual losing streak.

The final two singles contests both went the distance, as Cabrera battled back from a slow first set in flight one to a win over MWSU's Chavez, 0-6, 6-1, 6-2. The Griffons' lone victory occurred at No. 5 singles after Curci defeated Piskulic, 6-3, 3-6, 6-2.

Missouri State returns to the courts tomorrow at 1 p.m. versus Cowley College at Cooper Tennis Complex in Springfield. Admission is free.
