November 02, 2023 | Women's Soccer
DES MOINES, Iowa – The Missouri State women's soccer team's season came to a close after Valparaiso battled the Bears to win 1-0 in the semifinal round of the Missouri Valley Conference Tournament on Thursday.
The Bears (12-2-5, 7-0-3 MVC) held the Beacons to zero goals through the first 90 minutes in a game. Neither team was able to convert in regular time, so the game was forced to go into overtime. In the 96th minute of play, six minutes into overtime, Valpo was able to send one into the goal off a corner kick to seal the game.
MoState outshot the Beacons all game with 19 shots to Valpo's nine, as both teams put seven shots on-goal. Gracie English, an All-MVC first team selection, led the Bears offense with five shots. MVC Goalkeeper of the Year Camielle Day logged six more saves to bring her season tally up to 53.
"It was a very tough loss. I'm sad for the team and especially our seniors," head coach Kirk Nelson said. "But I'm extremely proud of our overall season. It was one of the best in program history. This is a special team and they put everything they had into this journey every single day. I am very proud of all of them."
The Bears end the season with only two losses and eight goals allowed through 19 games. The two losses are the fewest in a season in program history. The Bears' goalkeepers set new records with 13 shutouts and eight consecutive shutouts.
