SPRINGFIELD -- Missouri State will honor one of its men's basketball all-time greats on Saturday, Nov. 25 with the jersey retirement of (#32) Danny Moore.
The ceremony will take place at halftime of the men's basketball game vs. South Carolina State on that date, which starts at 1:00 p.m., at Great Southern Bank Arena.Â
Moore was the top scorer and rebounder for the Bears of coach Steve Alford all three seasons he wore the maroon and white from 1996 to 1999. Most notably, he sparked a memorable and magical run through the 1999 NCAA Tournament with wins over Wisconsin and Tennessee on the way to reaching the Sweet Sixteen for the only time in the program's Division I history.
To commemorate the 25th anniversary of the 1999 Sweet Sixteen run, many of Moore's teammates and head coach Steve Alford will be in attendance to be recognized as well.
"This is such a great honor, and I couldn't be more grateful that my jersey is being retired as it represents not only me but the whole (1999) Sweet Sixteen team," said Moore. "I couldn't have done it without them, and I'm glad we get to celebrate together as a team for the 25th anniversary of that memorable season."
After transferring to Missouri State from Miami of Ohio, Moore would earn All-Missouri Valley Conference honors each of the next three seasons for the Bears, including first-team honors in 1997 and 1999. He was also the MVC Newcomer of the Year his sophomore season and was on the MVC All-Tournament Team twice during his three-year tenure.
The 6-foot-11 post sensation was as smooth with his outside touch as he was at close range. He fired at a 53.7-percent clip from the field during his career while setting MSU career marks for free throws made (538) and attempted (685) to bolster an impressive 78.5-percent accuracy from the line. He also held the club's career record for blocked shots (167) until it was broken in 2018, while his career scoring total of 1,691 points still ranks No. 6 all-time in program history.Â
Moore's debut season with the Bears in 1996-97 yielded the fourth-best single-season scoring total (645) in team history -- with double-figure scoring efforts in all 33 games -- as well as the most free throws (214) and free throw attempts (276) ever. That season culminated in 24-9 run and NIT appearance. Two years later, his 84 blocked shots shattered a school single-season record that still stands, while his 25 points against Tennessee in the NCAA Tournament matched a team record for March Madness scoring.
The native of Shelbyville, Indiana was twice voted as the MSU Coors Player of the Year Award and was inducted into the Missouri State Athletics Hall of Fame in 2011.
A number of ticket specials are available for the Nov. 25 game. In addition to free admission for all kids 12 and under, $5 adult tickets are available for all bleacher seats and all upper-level seats (based on availability) for this special weekend celebration.
