
Beach Volleyball Set for CCSA Championship

SPRINGFIELD – The Missouri State beach volleyball team starts postseason play this week as the Beach Bears compete in the Coastal Collegiate Sports Association Championships at the John Hunt Park Sand Volleyball Complex in Huntsville, Ala., April 28-30.
The Bears (12-14) enter the Championships as the No. 6 seed and will face the No. 3 seed LSU in the opening round of action on Thursday at 11 a.m.
LSU comes into the tournament with an overall record of 27-8 and carries a four-match winning streak. Reilly Allred and Holly Carlton lead the Tigers with a record of 26-8 while playing primarily in the No 3 flight.
The Bracket
The 2022 CCSA Beach Volleyball Championship will be a six-team double-elimination tournament contested over three days. The Bracket features four nationally ranked programs, No. 2 TCU, No. 4 Florida State, No. 6 LSU and No. 19 South Carolina.Â

Missouri State fell to No. 9 Stanford (1-4) and Houston Baptist (1-4) during the final day of the TCU Invitational on April 16, in Fort Worth, Texas. The Bears picked up wins in both matches at the No. 2 Flight at Grace Cook and Chloe Tome improved to 22-4 on the season.
Scouting the Bears
Head Coach Gretchen Hand has made an immediate impact at the helm as the Bears have recorded 12 victories this season. Missouri State has swept Missouri Baptist, Huntingdon, Arizona Christian, Abilene Christian and Ottawa twice.
Cook and Tome lead the Bears with a 22-4 mark in the No. 2 spot and are outscoring opponents 1,135-808 this season. The duo's 31-5 career record is the best mark all-time among Missouri State pairs. Cook and Tome also held a program-best 14-match win streak.
The No. 5 pair of McAllen and Rattler hold a 17-9 record this season. All but one of their wins have come courtesy of sweeps. The pair's 17 victories in a single season rank second all-time. Becca Bach and Grayson Hall also have eclipsed the double digit wins mark with 11 each.
The Bears have won 127 of their 264 sets played and have a 66-65 combined pairs record. This season, coach Gretchen Hand has tried out 15 pair combinations in the lineup, while 13 Bears have competed officially.
Hand at the Helm
Hand was named the third head coach in Missouri State Beach Volleyball on July 2, 2021, by Athletic Director Kyle Moats. Hand comes to Missouri State after spending the last two-and-a-half years as director of volleyball at Webber International University in Babson Park, Fla. During her tenure with the Warriors, she worked with the men's and women's indoor programs in addition to the beach team and contributed to the beach team's conference title and NAIA national fourth-place finish in 2019. As a player, Hand competed professionally from 2001-2015. She had main-draw finishes in the AVP (American Volleyball Professionals), the NVL (National Volleyball League), Corona Wide Open, the EVP (Extreme Volleyball Professionals) and the FIVB, competing across the United States, Brazil, Colombia, Ireland and Thailand.
On Jan. 2, 2022, Hand announced the addition of assistant coach Carol Welcher, who comes to Missouri State with nearly 20 years of coaching and playing experience at the national, collegiate, club, and high school levels. She was the assistant coach for UCSD's women's volleyball team for the 2016-2017 season. Before UCSD, Welcher was also the head coach and director of the girl's varsity volleyball program at Mater Dei Catholic High School in Chula Vista and coached for La Jolla Volleyball Club and Beach Dig, both located in San Diego. Welcher competed in four years of professional indoor volleyball as a player in Finland, France, Germany, and Switzerland. She also spent seven years on the AVP's beach tour.
