KIRKWOOD, Mo. -- Missouri State made a furious comeback attempt on the final nine holes of the Missouri Valley Conference Women's Golf Championship here Tuesday, but ultimately fell one stroke shy of a conference title at the conclusion of the tournament's third and final round.
The Bears (308-303-301--912) carded the best score of the final round, but fell by the narrowest of margins to Illinois State (309-295-307--911) which entered play Tuesday with a seven-stroke lead.
Drake (935), Bradley (945) and Evansville (949) rounded out the top-five team finishers in the ten-team field.
Arielle Keating led the Bears' final-round charge at Greenbriar Hills Country Club, firing an incredible two-under 33 on the back nine to get MoState within striking distance. Keating's four birdies and three pars in that span gave the pre-tournament favorites a shot as the leaders came up the fairway of the final hole.
Keating finished with scores of 77-73-77--227 to lead Missouri State and finish in third place among the league's 45 individual finishers. Abby Cavaiani, who shared individual runner-up honors at the MVC Championship a year ago, posted a score of 77-77-74--228 to finish just a stroke behind Keating after a strong final round placed her in a tie for fourth.
Also pushing the Bears' comeback efforts on Tuesday was Kayla Pfitzner (77-79-73--229) who matched the squad's top round of the tournament and carded seven straight pars down the stretch to finish round three with a two-over 73 on the 5,830-yard course. Pfitzner ultimately racked up her first top-10 Valley showing with an eighth-place finish and pick up All-MVC honors.
Cavaiani also earned All-MVC laurels for the fourth time, while she and Keating represented the Bears on the first-ever MVC All-Tournament Team.
Missouri State's 29 birdies, including 10 on the final day, was tops in this year's tournament field. The Bears also led all MVC squads in scoring average on par-three (3.28) and par-four (4.31) holes throughout the 54-hole event.
This year's runner-up team performance marked Missouri State's best finish at The Valley meet since the Bears captured the 2018 title.
