SPRINGFIELD – In hard-fought battles with conference opponents, the Missouri State women's tennis team wrapped up Missouri Valley Conference play here this weekend with losses to Northern Iowa and Drake.
UNI Recap: (UNI 6, MSU 1)
MSU started out the weekend against UNI, where Sandra Lukacova earned a win for the Bears in Flight No. 5, defeating the Panthers' Thaissa Moreira 6-3, 7-6 (3). The Bears also took several singles matches into three sets with Flights No. 2, No. 3 and No. 4 going down to the wire. Playing in the second position, Juliette Robinson took Loreno Cardosa to the brink before dropping the match 4-6, 6-3, 6-2, while Mara Presot fell to Emma Carr (3-6, 6-3, 6-3) and Kate Miley was defeated by Andrijana Brkic (2-6, 6-3, 6-2).
Drake Recap: (DU 7, MSU 0)
The Bears continued their weekend in a Senior Day matchup with Drake on Saturday afternoon. MSU once again put up a fight in singles play, where several flights battled to three sets.
"It was a very tough match today versus Drake, hats off to them," said head coach Randall Knox. "I was excited today for the crowd we had to celebrate our senior, Mara Presot."
Playing in the first position, Robinson lost the first set to Liza Petushkova, before coming back to win the second. Ultimately, she dropped the match (6-7(7), 6-1, 10-3). In Flight No. 3, Miley took Daria Walczak to three sets, battling in a 3-6, 6-1, 10-8 loss. Lukacova also made strides against her opponent, before falling 3-6, 6-2, 10-1 to Drake's Kelsy Neville.
MSU's next outing will be at the MVC Tournament on April 22-24 in Des Moines, Iowa, where the Bears' opponent will be revealed on Sunday, April 17.
