Prim Invited to Play in Portsmouth Invitational

April 11, 2022

PORTSMOUTH, Va. -- Missouri State standout Gaige Prim's post-season honors continued to roll in Monday with his announcement as a participant in the 2022 Portsmouth Invitational Tournament.

Each year for 67 years the PIT has invited 64 of the best college basketball seniors from across the nation to participate in a four-day, 12-game tournament in front of representatives from every NBA team. The Portsmouth Invitational returns in 2022 after a two-year hiatus during the pandemic.

The 68th annual PIT will be held April 13-16 at Churchland High School in Portsmouth. The only other Missouri State player to ever participate in the Portsmouth Invitational was Kyle Weems who he averaged 13.3 points, 4.7 rebounds and a tournament-high 3.3 steals at the event in 2012.

Prim is coming off a stellar performance in the 2022 Dos Equis 3X3U National Championship in New Orleans where he averaged 7.6 points and 7.6 rebounds per game for a combined team of Missouri Valley and Horizon League standouts that finished 4-4 at the event. Prim's rebounding average was tops among all players, while he ranked fourth in scoring and third in field goal percentage (.603) in New Orleans.

A two-time All-MVC first-team selection, Prim also earned a spot on the NABC All-Region first team for the second year in a row after posting 16.3 points and a team-best 8.0 rebounds per game as a senior. He converted 56.6 percent of his field goals and 78.7 percent of his free throws in 2021-22. He also racked up 59 assists, 41 blocks and 29 steals in 34 appearances, while earning a spot on the Naples Invitational All-Tournament Team. Prim finished his three-year stint in Springfield with 1,338 points and 627 rebounds in 86 games while closing out his tenure ranked 15th on the school's career scoring list.
