Swim Bears Record Five Wins on Day Two of MVC Showcase

October 22, 2022

CARBONDALE, Ill. – Missouri State swimming and diving racked up five event wins Saturday morning here during the second and final day of the Missouri Valley Conference Showcase.

The women's team finished second in the invitational-style meet at the south site, concluding the meet with 845 points. The Bears ranked just behind first-place Southern Illinois (909.50). Ending in third and fourth place were Little Rock (613) and Evansville (480.50).

In the tri-dual, the men's team defeated Evansville, 240.50-108.50, and fell to SIU, 222-128.

"The best thing about competing in October is the information you learn about individuals as well as the team as a whole," head coach Dave Collins said. "We have learned a lot during the last three weeks and look forward to making the necessary adjustments for success in the future.

"I believe in this group and feel we have a lot to be excited about," Collins added.

On day two, Dylan Moffatt earned his second first-place finish of the tri-dual, this time winning the 500-yard freestyle (4:34.80). This event proved to be favorable for the Bears, as Pawel Krawczyk (4:35.68) and Brunno Suzuki (4:39.26) finished right behind Moffatt in second and third place. Moffatt continues to improve on the season in this event, beating his previous season-high mark set on Oct. 14 in the dual versus Drury (4:37.68).

"Getting on the road to race at SIU was a great opportunity to make some adjustments in race strategy and plan," Moffatt said. "The changes produced good results over the meet and led to some well put together races. A good way to cap off a series of meets to kick off the season."

Aside from the 500-yard freestyle, the men's team recorded three second-place finishes during day two. Krawczyk took second in the 200-yard butterfly (1:53.10), Suzuki snagged second in the 200-yard individual medley (1:52.95) and the team of Alex Boutin, Nick Schuster, Robbie Hill and Lucas Chadwell came in second in the 200-yard medley relay (1:32.31).

In Heat A, the women's team grabbed first place in four different events. In the 200-yard medley relay, the squad of Kelly Sego, Yuliya Zubina, Sami Roemer and Jordan Wenner took first with a time of 1:42.85, beating MSU's previous season-best time in this event (1:43.21) set back on Oct. 7 in the dual versus Lindenwood.

Roemer continued her standout start to the season, grabbing first in the 200-yard individual medley (2:06.07), topping her previous season-best time (2:06.40) set back on Oct. 7 versus Lindenwood.

"I'm really excited that I've been able to race well for the Bears this season, and that I've seen some good consistency in my individual swims," Roemer said. "This was a great meet for the women to experience early on in the season to prepare us more for what's coming up."

In the 100-yard freestyle, Wenner recorded a first-place finish (51.44), narrowly beating out her second-place teammate Anna Lucas (52.68). Wenner improved in every meet for this event, her most recent time being in the dual against Drury on Oct. 14 (52.18).

"I'm really happy with my swims this weekend and with how the team performed," Wenner said. "There are some things I need to work on, but it was good to race people that will be at the conference meet."

The women capped off a complete first-place sweep of all four relay events in the invitational, emerging victorious in the 400-yard freestyle relay (3:28.96) with a squad of Wenner, Yuliya Zubina, Ulyana Zubina and Lucas.

In diving, Courtney Stanbury came in third in the one-meter diving competition (197.55) for the women's team. On the men's side, Storm Opdahl grabbed second in the three-meter diving competition (258.25), with Cole Hysong (248.20) and Logan Schelfaut (220.50) finishing in third and fourth.

"This year's group of divers is young with Courtney, a sophomore, and three freshmen on the men's side," diving coach James Huelskamp said. "The freshmen are diving very well for this early in the season, and Courtney placing third on both boards sets herself up for a great season."

MoState returns to the pool on Nov. 4-5 with a two-day tri-dual against Indiana State and Miami (Ohio) in Terre Haute, Ind.
